St. Ed cheerleaders rally grade school kids to read more

St. Edward Central Catholic High School in Elgin recently participated in National Spirit Day on Sept. 9. It was a national campaign set in motion by UCA-Universal Cheerleaders Association. They are trying to accumulate 90,909 hours of community service.

St. Edward's was one of four squads in Illinois (the only one in the Chicago area) that participated.

They traveled to six local grade schools and held a Reading Pep Rally which kicked off the monthlong "WAVE Goodbye to TV" contest. The students in first to third grade keep reading logs and the school with the most hours on Oct. 7 wins. They will be invited to be recognized on Oct. 16 during half-time of the varsity football game against Marian Central.

The 2009 Green Wave cheerleaders: are Danielle Gemszi, Kristina Brockner, Devon McCorkle, Taylor Lundquist, Carly Colasuono, Lisa Uzitas, Karyn Durkin, Jenna Roth, Gina Porto, Ana Barbosa, Brittany Godfrey, Nicole Montiel, Selena Rios, Hayley Budish, Ashley Gradisher, and Kayla Palia. The coach is Wendy Kelly.
