Burgers for South Elgin parks
The McDonald's at Spring Street and McLean Boulevard in South Elgin will donate 20 percent of its proceeds on Oct. 19 to the South Elgin FUNdation, a not-for-profit arm of the village's parks department. Members of the FUNdation will be at the restaurant from 5 to 8 p.m., which also is the time for the fundraiser.
Huntley gets masks for pets
The Huntley Fire Protection District will be able to save more animals from smoke inhalation, thanks to the recent donation of several oxygen masks from Invisible Fence of Dundee-McHenry. More than 40,000 pets died in fires in 2006, most of them from smoke inhalation, according to Huntley firefighters. Many of those pets could have been saved if more fire departments had oxygen masks for pets. Invisible Fence, a national company with offices in Crystal Lake, has also donated masks to the Richmond, Spring Grove and Crystal Lake fire departments and plans to donate masks to other departments in the area. A veterinarian will train firefighters on how to use the masks.
