Defenders' used book sale returns at new site
It used to be the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County would hold book sales every fall and winter at its recycling center in Woodstock.
But when the group lost the use of the facility last year, the future of the popular book sale was in doubt.
This year, thanks to the Algonquin Township Road District and Classic Cinemas, the used book sale is on again.
The Defenders' used book sales started many years ago in response to people looking for a way to recycle the books they no longer wanted.
Soon books in great condition were being donated by individuals and local libraries.
The warehouse space was cold and dusty, but folks still spent time looking through the shelves and tables for their winter reading materials. The new sites will be a big improvement.
The first book sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Algonquin Township Road District garage, 3702 Route 14 between Crystal Lake and Cary. Book donations will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Thursday, Sept. 24.
Beginning in early October, an ongoing sale will be held at 225 N. Main St. on the Woodstock Square. Books also will be accepted for donation at the store, but hours of operation will vary; call the Defenders office at (815) 338-0393, or visit www.mcdef.org.
