Train station work unveiled
Lombard officials will celebrate improvements to their downtown Metra station with a ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. Oct. 1. The project, funded by proceeds from a tax increment financing district, included work to replace the roof and construct a new clock tower. Crews also added a new security system, installed a plasma TV for patrons' viewing, improved the restrooms and painted the interior. An independent coffee vendor opened shop this week.
Speaker series returns
Educational consultant and author Michele Borba presents "Raising Self-Reliant Kids" at 7 p.m. today in the Glenbard West High School auditorium, 670 Crescent Blvd., Glen Ellyn. Train station work done
Naperville's construction work to improve commuter access and to build a new covered bike shelter at the Route 59 Metra Station is now complete. Work began in early August to replace concrete stairs with sidewalks, replace the curb, gutter and sidewalks in front of the station, perform sidewalk construction in the parking lot area to make them more handicapped accessible and resurface several areas. A new covered bike shelter is open as well, adding more than 45 new bike parking spaces.
Anti-war groups to rally
A rally and vigil to oppose the war in Afghanistan is scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at Old Town Pavilion, 111 Third St., Bloomingdale. The rally will be followed by a march to Congressman Peter Roskam's office on Bloomingdale Road to urge him to support a national dialogue leading to withdrawal of American troops. Representatives of local and national peace groups are expected to speak. An optional collection will be held of items to be donated to Hines VA Hospital in Maywood. For details, call (630) 469-8251.
Arboretum wins award
Lisle's Morton Arboretum has been honored by the Illinois Association of Museums for its outdoor "Animal Houses" exhibit featuring 11 human-scale animal dwellings. It was chosen from among 16 entries for three Superior Achievement Awards. The award will be presented Oct. 2 in Bloomington. The exhibit continues through Nov. 15 at the arboretum. Clow wins library award
Clow Elementary School in Naperville has won the American Association of School Libraries' National School Library Media Program of the Year award. The award honors school library media programs that are fully integrated into the curriculum. The school will accept the award and $10,000 from the Follett Library Resources Corporation during an assembly at 2:45 p.m. Oct. 13 in the gym at 1301 Springdale Circle.
