Elgin brings home Larkin Invite championship
A week ago Elgin's girls tennis team took home its first plaque from competition in recent memory at the Charger Invite at Dundee-Crown High School.
On Saturday, the Maroons went across town and brought back another plaque - this time a championship plaque as Elgin won the team title at the Larkin Invite.
The Maroons finished with 10 points to win the championship.
"I am proud of the girls," said Elgin coach Jan LaBar. "The girls stepped up and never gave in. We have improved greatly as of late. They just hang in there and finish their points."
Larkin took second with 6 points, Streamwood had 4 for third and St. Edward came in with 2.
Elgin freshman Jacey Sirinit improved her individual record to 15-2 on the season at No. 1 Singles. Sirinit defeated St. Edward's Kailey Durkin (6-0,6-0), Streamwood's Jennifer Mellenthin (6-0, 6-0) and Larkin's Kirstie Shales (6-1, 6-1).
"It was fun out there," said Sirinit. "The competition was good. It was nice to get some long volleys going."
Elgin defeated St. Edward 4-0, Streamwood, 3-1, and Larkin 3-1 for the championship.
At No. 2 singles Elgin's Angel Certera defeated the Sabres' Diane Hernandez (7-6 (7-3), 6-4) and lost to Larkin's Shelby Matison (6-1, 6-1).
"I was proud of the way Shelby played," said Larkin coach Bob Young. "It was a good showing for her."
No. 1 doubles saw the Maroons' Carleen Kreib and Jordaizn Castanos defeat St. Edward's Fran Mangahas and Molly Pierce (6-0, 6-4), Streamwood's Kristel Gurgos and Anne Zimnoch (6-3, 6-1) and then Larkin's Lea Tiaokhia and Allie DeWitt (3-6, 6-2, 10-4.
At No. 2 doubles Elgin had two teams in the mix of things. Debbie Baeder and Stephanie Anderson were one team that LaBar entered in the tournament and the other two were Allison Harris and Aayushi Patel. The four girls won all their matches in straight sets. The first match had scores of 6-4 and 6-3 over the Green Wave's Mia Sidlin and Chelsea Scarnegie, 6-3 and 6-3 over Dena Raposa and Kinjal Dave of Streamwood and finally 6-1, 7-5 victory over the Royals' Catherine Siveraphet and Kristine Shee.
The host Royals came away with a team victory over the Green Wave 3-1 and tied Streamwood 2-2. In the Streamwood match, at No. 1 singles, the Sabres' Mellentin defeated Shales 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2, the Royals' Matison defeated Hernandez 6-4, 6-1 while in the doubles matches at No. 1 Tiaokhia and DeWitt of Larkin defeated Burgos and Zimnoch 6-3, 6-0 and at No. 2 the Sabres' Dave and Rapesan defeated Siveraphet and Shee 3-6, 7-5, 10-4.
The Green Wave went into every match losing 1-0 as they were without a No. 2 singles player. But in its final match against the Sabres, Streamwood's Mellenthin retired before play began and their No. 2, Hernandez, played up at No. 1 but fell to the Wave's Durkin. Durkin, a freshman, also defeated Shales of Larkin for a 2-1 tourney record.
