McHenry handles Grayslake North
Grayslake North's football team wanted to make something special happen in its first-ever meeting with McHenry on Friday night.
Instead, the Knights were knocked over by the Warriors 42-0 in a Fox Valley Conference crossover in Grayslake.
The Knights (1-2) struggled offensively, 74 yards of offense and managed 4 first downs.
"Offensively, we we're awful," Wood said. "Great kids; we executed at times in the last two weeks. Obviously, we didn't come close. We were way under 100 yards of offense."
Meanwhile McHenry (1-2), on every possession in the opening quarter started inside the Knights' 30-yard line, which made it harder for the Knights to get its wheels going.
"Defensively, (it's) hard to say, you played OK when you give up 40-something points." Wood said. "We did hold them without scoring (in the first quarter). When the defense continues doing that, they can only do so much, holding a team for so long. McHenry scored and kept scoring."
The .Knights' Ross Sauer intercepted a Thomas Rose (21 of 29 for 264 yards) pass in the end zone to stop a 14-play opening Warrior drive.
"It was nice, because we got some pressure on the quarterback," Sauer said. "I read it and saw it from the film that they like to run that pass. I just read the quarterback all the way."
But the Warriors broke the door down, scoring three times in the second quarter with the help of receiver Trevor Marunde (11 catches, 170 yards) setting up each score.
Jake Howe (16 carries, 64 yards and 2 TDs) scored on a 9-yard run, Dana Kohn had a 1-yarder and Rose scored from 55 yards out.
Howe, Kohn and Trever Jones each found the end zone in the second half for the other three scores.
"I really don't think this was a surprise," McHenry coach Tim Beagle said. "We thought we played well last week (against St. Charles North) and had opportunities. Maybe we took advantage this time of the opportunities we had here. Last two games, things didn't click for us. Against (Grayslake North) things clicked for us."
