Scouting: WW South @ Maine South

WW South (1-0) at Maine South (1-0)

Nonconference

Game time: 7 p.m. today.

Last week: WW South 34, Hinsdale Central 26; Maine South 64, Schaumburg 35.

Last year: Did not play.

Outlook: After surviving last week's win over 2008 Class 8A runner-up Hinsdale Central, the Tigers face the team that beat the Red Devils in last year's title game for their third state championship. WW South coach Ron Muhitch said he'll continue to use both Reilly O'Toole, who threw for 209 yards and 3 touchdowns last week, and Mack Tracey at quarterback to force opponents to defend multiple looks. Expect a much more diverse Tigers offense, where the main goal on that side of the ball is to get a better ground game going. Of the 121 rushing yards last week, Julian Banuelos had 49 of them on one fourth-quarter run. The quickness on WW South's defense will come in handy against a high-flying Maine South offense. The Hawks' handful of two-way players includes all-state running back Matt Perez, also a defensive end, and quarterback Tyler Benz, who also plays linebacker. While the offense clearly dominated last week's win over Schaumburg - featuring 2 passing touchdowns and 3 rushing scores from Benz - the defense showed vulnerability. If the Tigers can tighten up defensively after allowing 400 total yards last week, there should be plenty of opportunities to put points on the board with an expanding number of options on offense.

Next week: WW South at Glenbard East (1-0); Maine South at Highland Park (0-1).
