It's all Glenbard West

Glenbard West won bragging rights for a third consecutive season in the battle of Glen Ellyn.

This time the Hilltoppers (1-0) made sure the result was never in doubt, scoring each of the seven times it had the ball to defeat cross-town rival Glenbard South 49-0 at Glenbard South on Friday night.

"I'm really impressed with our passing game. The kids executed well," Hilltoppers coach Chad Hetlet said. "We made a lot of mistakes the first game of last season, penalties and whatnot, and we wanted to clean those up."

The Raiders (0-1) were missing several key players due to injuries, including quarterback Trace Wanless, defensive back Brandon Phillips and linebacker Brian Duffy, and Hetlet said their absence was noticeable.

"Glenbard South and it affected them," Hetlet said. "We played well, but they definitely had injuries that affected them. They're a good football team. They had to fill in a lot of holes tonight."

Hilltoppers quarterback Tyler Warden ran for 2 touchdowns and threw for 4 more. The last of his touchdown passes followed a onsides kick the Hilltoppers recovered. JT Mesch took the short pass and turned it into a 42-yard scoring play, his second of the night, to give Glenbard West a 35-0 halftime lead.

"All Glenbard West," Raiders coach Dan Starkey said. "You just have to give your opponent credit sometimes. They just really got after us tonight. The first half they really hurt us with some big plays against our defense. I thought we did a decent job stopping the run, but they really hurt us with some big plays in the passing game."
