Roselle to host new Woofstock for dogs
Since Roselle's Odlum dog park opened two years ago, it has become the place for pooches in the village to see and be seen.
Now Roselle pet owners have their calendars marked for the park's canine event of the year.
On Saturday, Aug. 22, the Roselle Park District will host its first Woofstock, a day filled with obstacle courses, a costume fashion show for dogs, Doga (dog yoga) demonstrations, vendors and more.
"I think the dog park is growing in popularity and pet owners are looking for social opportunities and social networking," park district Director Heidi Lapin said. "We thought this would be a great way to give something back to the owners who always use our park."
The event is free to anyone who holds a Pooch Pass for Odlum Park, while others are welcome for a $5 fee and must show proof of dog immunizations. Other Woofstock attractions include free pet facials, discounted nail trimming, agility course demonstrations, and information on pet health and safety.
Park district officials said they hope to make the event an annual tradition, while also expanding attractions or amenities at the dog park each year.
"We've added some trees since it's opened and each year we'll add more to it," said Kathy Herrmann, park district marketing coordinator. "I think this is just the start of it and it could be just a whole lot of fun."
As dog events grow in popularity around DuPage County, along with dog-centered businesses, park district officials say they aren't worried about over-saturation. In fact, they say, dogs are becoming more like family members than pets and now is the time to join the trend.
"People love their pets and they are going to do what it takes to showcase and socialize with their animals," Lapin said. "Plus, not every community has a dog park, so Roselle is already unique."
