Golf fundraiser tees off in Schaumburg

The second annual Links Technology Cup golf outing benefiting the Schaumburg Park Foundation teed off today at the Schaumburg Golf Club as more than 150 golfers let loose with birdies, eagles and mulligans.

Golfers paid $150 to play 18 holes, sample food and drink from a variety of Schaumburg area restaurants, compete in the Daily Herald Shootout and Woodfield Putt of the Day contests, and enjoy a barbecue dinner after their rounds. The goal was to raise $30,000.

Links Technology President and CEO Brian Burke, teeing off from the fifth hole, said of playing golf to raise money for charity: "Make it fun, make it worthwhile and everybody wins."

He said he was pleased with the willingness of businesses to contribute in a down economy.

"Schaumburg is a magical place. The display of confidence is overwhelming," he said. "This is a showcase of Schaumburg businesses and its people coming together for a cause."

The money raised will go to such things as programs for preschool children and recreation scholarships for needy families, said Patricia Casler, director of communications and corporate relations for the Schaumburg Park District.

As a side note, the Links Technology trophy was bought on eBay for $79 dollars, then spruced up by Finer Line Engraving in Schaumburg.

And Sharon DiMaria of the Schaumburg Park District had the shortest summation of the event: "Oh my God, it's awesome."
