'Trail of History' event in need of volunteers

McHenry County Conservation District seeks volunteers to make the "Trail of History" come to life the weekend of Oct. 17-18.

New volunteer orientations will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 26, or 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at Wiedrich Education Center in Glacial Park, 6316 Harts Road, Ringwood.

Individuals and families can learn about all the different opportunities available during this two-day re-enactment of the Northwest Territory between 1670 and 1850. Volunteers are needed to dress in period costumes and demonstrate everyday activities of settler life, such as cooking meals over campfires, teaching in a one-room schoolhouse, making cornhusk dolls or candles, showing military tactics, acting as apprentice servants, doing children's games and dress-up and more. Non-costumed volunteers also are needed for greeters on school day, in the first aid tent and as groundskeepers and crowd control.

People of all ages are encouraged to get involved in this popular living history event that attracts more than 10,000 people to Glacial Park each fall.
