Charter school decision expected:

Teachers and administrators at the Cambridge Lakes Charter School in Pingree Grove are awaiting the decision of an appeals court in the battle over teachers' push to form a union. The court this week heard oral arguments from both sides. Teachers claim they have been fired and intimidated because of their support for a union. The organization that runs Cambridge Lakes has argued the school is not bound by the same rules as other public schools. The school's management appealed a 2008 decision by a state panel in favor of teachers. It is unknown when a decision will be handed down.

U-46 retains certification status:

Elgin Area School District U-46 learned this week that it has retained its ISO 9001:2008 certification, a designation that recognizes the district as a quality management system. U-46 is one of a small number of school districts across the nation, and the only known Illinois school district, to be ISO 9001:2008 certified. Certification is valid through June 2011. It was developed for use in the business sector, but in recent years it has become popular among school districts and in the government sector as a method of promoting continuous improvement.

School seeks veterans:

Hampshire High School is seeking the names of local veterans for the school's celebration on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The goal of the event, "Honoring the Veterans of Hampshire," is to provide students with a better understanding of veterans' contributions. The Community Unit District 300 school board voted this year to hold classes on Veterans Day. Board members said students could learn more about veterans from presentations and classes than they could staying home. Call (847) 792-3500.
