Funeral scheduled for cousins killed in Deer Park wreck

Funeral services for the two cousins killed in a Deer Park crash early Saturday morning while returning from a bachelor party have been announced.

Visitation for Alonso Ramos-Gomez, 22, of West Dundee and Octavio Carrera, 23, of Palatine is from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 2, at Friedrichs Funeral Home in Mount Prospect. A memorial service will start at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 3, at the funeral home.

The family for Jozef Zwalinski, 51, the Palatine cabdriver also killed in the crash, have yet to make funeral arrangements, Lake County Coroner Richard Keller said.

Ramos-Gomez was behind the wheel of a Lexus carrying Carrera and Eric Moreno when it collided the cab on Lake-Cook Road near Park Hill Drive around 5:10 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.

Keller said Monday that Ramos-Gomez had a .22 blood-alcohol level. He and Carrera, who grew up in Des Plaines and graduated in 2004 from Maine West High School, were to stand up in Moreno's wedding, friends said. Moreno suffered a broken leg in the crash.

Cmdr. Robert Zujewski of the Kildeer Police Department, which serves Deer Park, said investigators obtained the black boxes from both vehicles. They'll examine the electronic devices, hoping they'll be able determine the cars' speed and other factors leading to the crash.

But Zujewski said no charges will be filed in connection with the wreck.

Contrary to earlier reports, it did not take four hours to extricate the four men from the wreck; that was the total time of the on-scene investigation, said Chief Terry Mastandrea of the Lake Zurich Fire and Rescue Department, one of the responding agencies.

He said crews quickly freed Carrera and Moreno from the mangled Lexus before an ambulance took them to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Lake Barrington. Carrera died at the hospital, while friends said Moreno was released later Saturday.

Ramos-Gomez and Zwalinski were pronounced dead at the scene.

Families for Carrera and Ramos-Gomez declined to comment through the funeral home director. Zwalinski's family could not be reached Tuesday.
