Shelter receives $10,000:
Longtime Wheaton residents Donald and Helen Westlake have donated $10,000 to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans to help fund a $1 million capital expansion program. The shelter plans to triple its capacity from five to 15 veterans in 2010, including adding space for female veterans for the first time. With a matching grant through DuPage County, the Westlakes' donation will be doubled if the shelter is successful in raising an additional $300,000 by the end of November. The Westlakes made the donation to honor members of their family who served in the armed services and the American Legion Auxiliary.

United Way of the DuPage Area will invest almost $4 million in more than 100 health and human service programs in 30 DuPage County communities during the coming year. The programs address needs in the areas of financial stability, health and wellness, children and youth, and crisis intervention and will benefit residents in the DuPage area. Final funding decisions were made by teams of volunteers who each spent more than 20 hours reviewing applications and evaluating program objectives and outcomes. To be eligible for United Way funding, all programs must demonstrate their ability to reach a high level of community impact.
