Sign up for tennis lessons in Algonquin

The Algonquin Community Tennis Association will offer tennis lessons to the public again this summer and fall. Lessons for grade school children are offered Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Registration may be taken up to the start of the program if room is available. Adult lessons, formal leagues and drop-in tennis are also being offered. Seminar on veteran pensions available

Oak Crest Hope Cottage Memory Center, 204 S. State St., Elgin, will host a Veteran Pension Seminar at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11, presented by Tim Wagenecht, representative from the American Association for Wartime Veterans. Learn how you can join the growing list of wartime veterans and surviving spouses who are receiving this entitlement. Admission is free but reserve your space by calling Marlene at (847) 429-9709.

Take your best shot at photo contest

The Cary Park District challenges area residents to give them your best shot in an amateur photo contest open to youth, teens, and adults. Photos submitted must have been taken at Cary Park District parks, facilities, or during a Cary Park District recreation program or special events. The photos will be used to commemorate July as National Park and Recreation Month. An exhibit will be on display at the Kraus Senior Center and a traveling exhibit will be on display at various special events throughout the summer. Select photos will be chosen to be voted on for the "People's Choice Award" awarding viewer favorites. Rules and entry forms can be found at carypark.com, at the Cary Park District Community Center and at the Kraus Senior Center. There is no fee to enter and each person may submit up to two different photographs. Deadline for submission is Friday, June 12. Altrusa Club hosts garage sale in June

The Altrusa Club of Elgin will hold its popular annual garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, June 19, and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 20 at 940 Douglas Ave. in Elgin. A variety of trinkets, treasures, and miscellaneous items will be available. Proceeds benefit local nonprofits. For information, call Nancy Schueneman at (847) 741-4524.

AMVETS hosts picnic for veterans

AMVETS of Cary-Grove Post 245 will host its 22nd annual picnic for hospitalized veterans in memory of Chris Chigas. Veterans from four VA hospitals will attend. Approximately 500 veterans from Illinois and Wisconsin will be bussed at 11 a.m. to Lions Park, 102 Beachway in Fox River Grove along the Fox River near the Route 14 bridge. There will be food, soda, music, bingo, games, pontoon boat rides and camaraderie. Volunteers and monetary donations are needed. Call Bob DePaul at (847) 639-0267.

Volunteers are need for July 4 parade

The Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin is deep in the planning stages for the Fourth of July Parade and is looking for volunteers. If you're interested, contact the DNA office at (847) 488-1456.

The parade is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 4. The parade will last nearly two hours with an estimated 15,000 spectators. For information, call (847) 488-1456 or visit downtownelgin.com.

Book club meets at Edgewater

The Chapter One Book Club at Edgewater by Del Webb in Elgin met for its monthly meeting on June 2 to celebrate the new officers with cake while hearing a short presentation about the Literacy Connection. A contribution of $200 to this agency was unanimously approved. The book was "The Day I Ate Anything I Wanted" by Elizabeth Berg.
