Scouting Monday's Rockford supersectional

Monday's supersectional

Class 4A at Rockford RiverHawks Stadium

Who: Cary-Grove (30-8) vs. Batavia (30-6)

When: 4:30 p.m.

The skinny: Cary-Grove seeks its first state berth. Batavia qualified for the Class AA quarterfinals in 2004. The Trojans have won 30 games for the first time in school history. The Bulldogs' 30 wins are also a school record. C-G advanced to the Elite Eight by beating Grant (4-3) and defending Class 4A state champion Prairie Ridge (11-5) at the Prairie Ridge regional, Huntley (6-0) and Larkin (9-2) at the DeKalb sectional. Batavia posted regional wins against West Aurora (7-3) and Willowbrook (11-6) and St. Charles North sectional victories over Wheaton Warrenville South (7-2) and Wheaton North (6-4). Batavia may pitch senior Jordan Coffey, who has returned from off-season shoulder surgery. As a sophomore quarterback for the Batavia football team in 2006, Coffey led a fourth-quarter rally against coordinator Don Sutherland's Cary-Grove defense to win a Class 6A state quarterfinal. Sutherland has been the head baseball coach at Cary-Grove for 22 years.

Advancement: The winner advances to the 7 p.m. state semifinal in Joliet next Friday against the winner of Game 2 of Monday's Rockford supersectional doubleheader between Barrington (21-14) and New Trier (29-7).
