Register for fall classes:

Open registration for summer and fall credit classes at Elgin Community College will continue until classes start, space permitting. Summer classes begin the weeks of June 15 and 29 and July 13. Fall 16-week classes begin the week of Aug. 24; 12-week classes begin the week of Sept. 21; and eight-week classes begin the week of Oct. 19. Early registration is advised to get the best selection of courses and times. Students with an ECC identification number can register online at elgin.edu/accessecc. Otherwise, registration may be made in person at the registration center in Room 165 of the Student Resource Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. The registration center is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. The college is closed Fridays through Aug. 7. Students will be expected to provide proof of having met course prerequisites, if documentation is not already on file with the ECC records office. Students with outstanding financial obligations to the college may not register until all bills are settled. For details, visit elgin.edu/register.

District 300 OKs smart boards:

The Community Unit District 300 school board has approved the purchase of 44 SMART boards for five schools that were under renovation this year. SMART boards allow teachers to demonstrate concepts by manipulating objects on an interactive whiteboard. The school board approved the purchase of 203 SMART boards earlier this year as part of a plan to put the technology in all 26 of the district's schools. The latest purchase will cost the district an estimated $165,295.

Road rally to support troops:

The Elgin Watch City VFW Post 1307 is sponsoring a Motorcycle and Vehicle Poker Run Rally on Sunday, July 12, to support U.S. military troops serving in Operation Enduring Freedom. The run will begin and end at the post, 1601 Weld Road, stopping at many American Legions and VFW posts along the way. Registration starts at 9 a.m. A pancake/sausage or egg burrito breakfast will be offered at a small cost. The first vehicle will leave the VFW at 11:30 hours. Registration is $15 per person and all proceeds go to provide personal supplies for the troops serving in the Middle East and for mailing of the packages.
