Kite-flying, 5K race coming to Schaumburg

The Schaumburg Park District has a couple events lined up over the next two weekends aimed at residents of all ages.

This Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the park district will hold its fifth annual Flying 4 Kids day at Meineke Recreation Center, 220 E. Weathersfield Way.

The free event allows kite flyers to fly kites and enjoy refreshments and other activities in recognition of the Park District Youth License Plate program. Proceeds from the plates go to park districts and other recreation agencies to provide innovative after-school programming for Illinois youth.

On-site kite-making kits will be available.

The following Sunday, June 7, the park distric will host its annual Run To Alexian Field 5K. The 3.1-mile race will begin at 7 a.m. in the Metra parking lot at 2000 S. Springinsguth Road and end on the infield of Alexian Field next door at 1999 S. Springinsguth Road.

The early entry fee of $19 is due by Monday, June 1. Race-day registration will cost $23. Participants are required to complete an official race form.

Check-in and race-day registration will last from 5:45 to 6:45 a.m., followed by a pre-race briefing at 6:45 a.m. June 7.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top male and female runners. Awards are also given to the top two finishers in each age category for men and women. All runners will receive a T-shirt.
