Interim Westminster superintendent named

The elders of Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Westminster Christian School recently announced the appointment of Patrick Bertsche as interim superintendent for the 2009-2010 school year. Bertsche, who will replace outgoing Superintendent Chad Dirkse, will begin working full time on July 1, but school officials report he already has begun some training. His appointment, officials said, will allow the school to continue to move forward while the search for a permanent replacement continues.

Bake sale/craft fair Saturday

Apply for District 47 board

Crystal Lake Elementary District 47 is accepting applications from residents who want to fill the vacant school board seat formerly occupied by Lisa Knoeppel. To apply, you must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and a resident of Illinois and the district for at least one year. Farmers market open Saturday

The Dundee Farmers Market is open beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday. About 40 vendors will sell fresh, locally grown produce, flowers and bedding plants, as well as antiques and collectibles. The farmers market is at the Dundee Township Visitors Center, also known as the Depot, 319 N. River St., East Dundee. The market runs from May through October and includes an annual tomato contest and pumpkin festival.

City honors centenarian

Elgin leaders designated Thursday as "Virginia Umberger Day" in honor of the longtime resident's 100th birthday. A member of the Elgin Garden Club and local environmentalist, Umberger has lived in Elgin since 1950. "This is overwhelming," she said after being honored by Mayor Ed Schock. "It's just been wonderful and I've loved very minute living here in Elgin, every minute. And that's a lot of minutes."
