DaVinci Academy students go green:

Da Vinci Academy middle school students were recognized on Earth Day by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency with a Green Youth Award for their "Air for the Environment" project on proper tire inflation. The students researched the safety, environmental, and fuel efficiency benefits of proper tire pressure, and carried out a project to check and properly inflate the car tires of parents and staff. The students, their parents, and the two teachers who sponsored the project traveled to Springfield on Earth Day to receive the award from Gov. Pat Quinn and Illinois EPA Director Doug Scott.

Water tower closed:

Algonquin officials have temporarily shut down the Hanson water tower while workers paint and perform scheduled maintenance to the facility. The tower is expected to reopen July 1. In the meantime, people living in the tower's service area might experience lower water pressure than usual.

Walk & Roll to fight cancer:

The American Cancer Society will hold its 37th annual Walk & Roll fundraiser starting this weekend with an event in Elgin. With the addition of two new suburban locations, the cancer society is hoping to raise $1.5 million this year that will help fund free patient service programs, research grants, education outreach and advocacy efforts to pass lifesaving laws. Walk & Roll participants annually raise funds before the event, often to commemorate friends and family who have lost their lives to cancer or honor those who currently struggle with the disease. Participants then take part in a 5-mile walk, 10-mile in-line skate or 15-mile bike. The Elgin event begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Festival Park. There is no registration fee to participate, but you are encouraged to raise pledges or make a donation. For details, call (630) 879-9009.
