Used book sale:

A used book sale today will raise money for the Wasco Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization. The sale is from 3:30 to 8 p.m. at the school, 4N782 School Street, Campton Hills. Books, CDs, audio books and software will be among items priced from 50 cents to $2. Call (847) 464-4064.

Sculpture unveiling:

The first of four bridge sculptures is scheduled to be dedicated at 7 p.m. Friday on the Donovan Bridge in downtown Batavia during the Green Walk. "Nature Sounds of Harmony" is by Kai Schulte. A sculpture representing history will be installed next year, followed by those representing art and science. The Green Walk, featuring ecology-friendly arts, crafts, exhibits and hands-on activities, starts at 5 p.m. See downtownbatavia.com for details.

New grocery in Batavia:

The Batavia City Council this week transferred a packaged goods liquor license from Amstadt's Finer Foods to the store that will be replacing it, Berkeley Finer Foods LLC. Amstadt's is scheduled to sell its store at Van Buren and Wilson streets in May. Berkeley owns stores in Cicero, Melrose Park and Berkeley.

Texas Hold 'Em Tournament:

St. Thomas More Church is hosting a Texas Hold 'Em Tournament at 6 p.m. Saturday in the school gym, 1625 W. Highland Ave. in Elgin. Buy-in is $50 with an option to re-buy after the first break. Grand prize is $1,000. Beer, wine, and food will be available for purchase. Individuals must be 21 or older to play. E-mail pokerstm@att.net to guarantee a spot.

Tennis clinics for charity:

Tennis coaches and players in Community Unit District 300 will offer a tennis clinic to raise money for the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation. The clinic is open to District 300 students, parents and staff. They will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Sunday. Each session costs $5 and will be held at Jacobs High School, 2601 Bunker Hill Drive. Register by e-mailing coachbetts@yahoo.com or calling (815) 403-5759. Walk-ins are also welcome.

ECC student trustee elected:

Elgin Community College students chose Mario Ruch, of Elgin, as their student trustee during student government elections earlier this month. Student trustees serve one-year terms on the board. Ruch, an international student from Honduras, is involved in the United Students of All Cultures, an international club promoting multicultural events, the Creative Writing Club and the Chinese Club of ECC. He currently is Student Government president. Ruch is majoring in biology at ECC and plans to graduate in 2010.
