Young school board candidate not throwing in the towel

Kevin Echevarria might have lost his bid for an Elgin Area School District U-46 board seat, but the 21-year-old candidate still plans to be a strong presence in the district he's a product of.

Echevarria, of Elgin, said in an interview that he's been approached to speak at several district schools, including Gifford Street Alternative High School in Elgin.

One of six candidates running for three seats, Echevarria earned 16 percent of votes across Cook, Kane and DuPage Counties.

Endorsed by the 2,400-member Elgin Teachers' Association, Echevarria said he didn't spend any money campaigning, and considers the race "a learning experience."

ESO and Judson partner up:

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra has named Judson University as its new corporate broadcast partner for 2009-2010. The Orchestra's Judson University Broadcast Series presents performances on the fourth Friday of each month on 98.7 FM WFMT.

"A growing city like Elgin needs a strong arts community and a strong academic community," Judson President Jerry Cain said in a news release.

In recent years, Judson and the ESO have worked together to provide reduced price tickets to Judson students who attend concerts for class assignments, and set up a fellowship program where business students at Judson are involved with market research for the Symphony.

The next Judson-sponsored broadcast will air at 8 p.m. April 24.

Larkin to put on "Annie":

The economic downturn's made it a hard-knock life for many of us.

That's why Larkin High School's production of "Annie" is timed perfectly.

Written during the Nixon years and about the Great Depression, the musical projects optimism in the face of adversity.

Parent volunteer Melissa Lane says students have been hard at work for months, perfecting the roles of Daddy Warbucks, Miss Hannigan and spunky orphans. Interested? The show starts at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $8 each. The musical will also be performed next Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25. Call 847-931-9570 for more information.

EHS students in PBS documentary: On Saturday, Elgin High School science teacher Deb Perryman and her students will present a community environmental workshop beginning at 7:30 a.m. and ending about 1 p.m.

The workshop, open to the public, will touch on public health and community structure, landfill space, alternatives to landfills, and sustainable energy. It will also feature kids activities and a tour of the Elgin High Nature Trail and outdoor classroom.

WTTW Channel 11 will be there to film the event for their upcoming documentary entitled "American Cities: A Rebirth."
