Hinsdale C. scores in bunches vs. Rams

After kicking away at it for 35 minutes, Tierney Burchett finally kicked in the door and six of her teammates rushed in after her.

Hinsdale Central's 7-0 win over Glenbard East in a girls soccer game on Tuesday only got rolling after Birchett crashed the Rams' net after a deflected shot by teammate Abby Morrison, cleaning it up into net just before halftime.

"We were definitely putting a lot of pressure on their goal. I know I had about five chances before that and missed them," Burchett said. "It was getting frustrating, but we finally got one in."

Less than a minute later, Morrison finished at the far post on a long cross from Courtney Arundel, and the Red Devils (1-1) led 2-0 at halftime.

"We put in a good first 40 minutes of play and then let down a little before the half," said first-year Rams coach Kent Overbey. "But it's a good game, early in the season, to see where we are and where we need to work to get to the next level."

Glenbard East (0-1-1) faced a Red Devils squad with a good wind at its back in the second half, and coach Skip Begley's side got goals from Arundel, Toni Kokenis, Lee Battaglia, Lena Husayni and Olivia Trilla to run away with the contest.

"It was nice to see us playing the ball wider today and attacking wide," Begley said. "Saturday (in a 1-0 loss to Naperville North), we shoved the ball down the middle of the field, but today we weren't doing that as much."

Early in the second half, Kokenis ran onto a serve from Deanna Husayni to the near post, and volleyed it home from short range. An Arundel penalty kick followed, Lena Husayni scored in the 56th minute, and Battaglia hit a bomb that snuck under the crossbar to finish the day's scoring.

The Red Devils forced 5 saves out of Rams keeper Daisy Rosas, and 3 more from Katie Stauch. Hinsdale Central's Nicole D'Agostino and Katie Tarman had a save each in the contest.

"Our defense was marking up well in the first half," Overbey said. "But as we wore down in the second half, we stopped following those marks all the way to the goal line."

Jackie Foreman did her part from midfield, and Overbey wasn't unhappy with the play of several of his players.

"Jackie likes to distribute the ball and she does a really good job of it," Overbey said. "I thought Erin Mrazek and Lindsay Paganucci played well on the outside at midfield, and (defenders) Mandy Paleczny and Olivia Trefilek did a nice job for us."
