Larkin to send band to Disney in style Tuesday Elgin Area Unit District 46 news

Here is what's in the news for the week of March 16-21 at Elgin Area Unit District 46 schools. For more information, visit u-46.org.

Board meeting

• On Monday, the U-46 Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. in Room 140 at the Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St. in Elgin. The public is welcome to attend and provide citizen comments to the school board at the open meetings. For information, visit the "School Board and Community" link at www.u-46.org.

Elgin High

• On Wednesday, the Elgin High School band will perform a concert at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, 1200 Maroon Drive. Admission is $1 per student, $2 per adult, and $6 per family.

Larkin High

• On Tuesday, 125 Larkin High School students will perform a "Disney Send-Off" concert at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, 1475 Larkin Ave., Elgin. The Wind Ensemble, Symphony Strings and Chorus will all be performing stage concerts at Epcot Center at Disney World during spring break. The academy dancers will perform at Downtown Disney. Also going to Disney World will be drama students and the Theater Tech group who will both be attending workshops.

• On Wednesday, the Visual and Performing Arts Academy senior students will perform their recital at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

South Elgin High

• On Friday, the first-ever "Celebration of Nations" cultural show will be presented from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at South Elgin High School, 760 E. Main St. The co-sponsors are the South Asian Student Association and the Organization of Latin American Students. This event included cultural dances, singing and a fashion show. Free food sampling will be available an hour before the show starts, as well as henna tattoos for an affordable price. Tickets are $3 per student with ID, or $5. Youth under age 5 get in free. Streamwood High

• On Thursday, a band concert will be presented at 7 p.m. in the Streamwood High School auditorium, 701 W. Schaumburg Road. Admission is $1 per student, $2 per adult, and $6 per family.

Abbott

• On Thursday, Abbott Middle School, 949 Van St. in Elgin, presents its first Fun Fair featuring "The Mega Event" from 5 to 8 p.m. Games include: 12-foot giant video screen Guitar Hero, obstacle course, moonwalk, Bungee Basketball, Gladiator Joust, Bouncy Boxing, plus many carnival games and prizes. Concessions include pizza, hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy, and SnoCones. Admission for an unlimited game play wristband is $15; individual game tickets are four for $1.

Kenyon Woods

• On Tuesday, Kenyon Woods Middle School band and orchestra students will combine to present a concert at 7 p.m. at the school, 1515 Raymond St., South Elgin. Admission is $1 per student, $2 per adult, and $6 per family.

Kimball

• On Monday, the elementary feeder school (Century Oaks, Creekside, Highland, Hillcrest, Sheridan elementary) beginner orchestra students will perform a concert at 7 p.m. in the Kimball Middle School auditorium, 451 N. McLean Blvd., Elgin.

• On Tuesday, the Kimball students will perform with the intermediate feeder school orchestra students for a concert at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

Larsen

• On Thursday, a Spring Band Concert will be presented at 7 p.m. in the Larsen Middle School auditorium, 665 Dundee Ave., Elgin. Admission is $1 per student, $2 per adult, and $6 per family.

Tefft

• On Tuesday to Thursday, a cast and crew of over 100 will present the Disney musical production "Mulan Jr." at 7 p.m. in the Tefft Middle School auditorium, 1100 Shirley Ave. in Streamwood. Tickets will be on sale at the door for $5.

Clinton

• On Tuesday, Clinton Elementary School students in third through sixth grades along with the school choir, will perform a choral concert at 7 p.m. at South Elgin High School.

Fox Meadow

• On Thursday, students in third through sixth grades at Fox Meadow Elementary School in South Elgin will present "Gotta Be Jazz!" concert at the South Elgin High School auditorium. The third-graders perform at 6:30 p.m.; fourth-graders at 7 p.m. and fifth- and sixth-graders at 7:30 p.m.

Hawk Hollow

• On Friday, "Hip-Hop Showcase" will be presented in assemblies at 9 and 10:15 a.m. at Hawk Hollow Elementary School in Bartlett. The performance includes various dances and routines that take the students on a journey through the history of hip-hop dance.

Hilltop

• On Wednesday, the Hilltop Elementary School PTO is sponsoring Family Fun Night from 3 to 9 p.m. at Chuck E. Cheese, 990 S. Barrington Road in Streamwood.

Laurel Hill

• On Thursday, a weekly ELL Parenting class will be held from 9:45 to 11 a.m. at the Laurel Hill Elementary School, 1750 Laurel Ave., Streamwood.

Liberty

• On Monday, students in fifth and sixth grades will participate in a spelling bee at noon in the Liberty Elementary School gym, 121 Naperville Road, Bartlett. Parents are invited to attend.

Lowrie

• On Friday, a PBIS schoolwide celebration will take place from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. in the Lowrie Elementary School gym, 264 Oak St., Elgin. Students will enjoy a NED assembly which entertains the audience with yo-yos. NED stands for "Never give up, Encourage others, Do your best."

Prairieview

• On Tuesday, at 9 a.m., fifth-grade students at Prairieview Elementary School in Bartlett will graduate from the D.A.R.E. program.

Washington

• On Friday, the Washington Elementary School PTA will give a bag of popcorn to every student.

In other news

• South Elgin High School junior Alyssa Krause won first place in the Illinois Drafting Educators Association's competition March 6. Her division was 3D architecture. She is currently enrolled in Honors Architecture 3-4. She will be competing at the state level at Illinois State University April 18.
