Bartlett cops arrest 2 teens after school lockdowns

Police have charged two teens in connection with a home burglary Tuesday that prompted the precautionary lockdown of some Bartlett schools.

Though the teens were taken into custody the day of the incident, charges took longer than usual to be filed because 16 area police departments assisted Bartlett in the case and there were questions regarding jurisdiction.

Nestor Renteria, 17, of the 100 block of Streamwood Drive in Streamwood, was charged with felony residential burglary and felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle, police said.

Police also cited a 16-year-old Hanover Park male with felony attempted vehicle hijacking and also cited him with the same crimes as Renteria. The 16-year-old's past record included possession of a stolen motor vehicle and burglary to a motor vehicle for two unrelated 2008 cases out of Bartlett, police said.

The pair are accused of burglarizing a home on the 600 block of Philip Drive. Police said the teens drove from the scene in a tan Saturn reported stolen from Schaumburg and crashed the car near Crystal Lane and Sayer Road. Authorities said the 16-year-old then tried to carjack another vehicle by pointing a gun he'd just stolen from the home, but the gun malfunctioned and the car sped away, police added.

According to the police account, a white GMC then picked up the 16-year-old at a McDonald's near Route 59. The driver did not know about the crimes and wasn't charged, police said. The 16-year-old was later arrested in Hanover Park, while Renteria was arrested by West Chicago police who found him found walking down Route 59.

Police commended a ComEd employee who witnesses some of the activity and whose account was instrumental in the arrests.

As police searched for the suspects Tuesday, several Bartlett schools were locked down. Liberty Elementary was placed on lockdown twice, though students were dismissed on time at 2 p.m.

The two teens will appear in court in Rolling Meadows. Their bond information wasn't available.
