Attorney appears before special grand jury

An attorney at the center of a special prosecutor's probe into claims work product was removed unlawfully from the McHenry County State's Attorney office appeared before a grand jury for about two hours Thursday. Kristen Foley, a former assistant state's attorney, and her lawyer did not comment on what testimony she may have given the panel, which has heard from at least one other former county attorney. Her attorney, Mark Gummerson, previously has said Foley is the target of the investigation, which has huge political overtones. Foley in 2007 filed an ethics complaint against her former boss, McHenry County State's Attorney Louis Bianchi, and supported his challenger, Daniel Regna, in the 2008 elections. Regna this week filed a petition for another special prosecutor to investigate claims the purportedly stolen work product included evidence Bianchi had a staff member perform campaign duties on county time.
