St. Edward's Yohn unanimous AP All-State choice

The postseason accolades have begun rolling in for St. Edward senior Katie Yohn.

Yohn, who set the Green Wave career scoring record and led her team to the Class 2A sectional finals, has been selected as the only unanimous choice to the Associated Press' All-State team. She was named first team on all 13 ballots cast by a statewide panel of sports writers and broadcasters.

"It's nice to know that all the hard work I've put in for the past four, five, six years, and all the AAU weekends not hanging out with my friends is paying off," Yohn said when told of the honor Tuesday afternoon.

Yohn, who will play at Bradley on scholarship next year, broke Beth Hasenmiler's career scoring record of 1,772 points during the Green Wave's sectional semifinal win over Chicago Christian. She graduates with 1,812 points in her four-year varsity career.

In leading the Wave to the sectional title game against Bishop McNamara, she scored 685 points this season, averaging 23.6 per game. She had six 30-plus games and set her own career high with a 39-point effort against Rosary late in the season.

She also averaged 8.8 rebounds per game, 5 assists, 4 steals, shot over 80 percent from the free-throw line and made 53 3-pointers, giving her 144 3-pointers for her career.

Yohn's career isn't quite over, as she will represent St. Edward in the 3-point Showdown at Redbird Arena in Normal this weekend during the Class 1A and Class 2A state finals. She will shoot in the preliminary round on Thursday night and if she is one of the four advancers, she'll shoot for the Class 2A championship on Saturday at 8 p.m.

"I've been practicing after school and shooting a lot," said Yohn, who advanced downstate in the competition as a sophomore when she helped St. Edward reach the Class A Elite Eight.

"It's hard to get down there so to do well would be cool."

The remainder of the AP first team for Class 2A included seniors Jasmine Davis of Massac County (Indiana signee) and Michelle Salvatori of Sterling Newman, junior Marley Hall of West Hancock and sophomore Jess Reinhart of Bloomington Central Catholic.

Junior Courtney Lindfors of Driscoll made the second team. Driscoll plays in the state semifinals on Friday at ISU.
