Westminster Christian advances in 1A regional

Westminster Christian advanced to a regional semifinal by gaining revenge on Mooseheart for an earlier loss with a 53-36 victory at the Class 1A Hinckley-Big Rock regional on Tuesday.

The Warriors (17-10) broke out of an offensive slump with a balanced attack from guards Mike Nicosia (12 points), Ben Carani (11 points) and 6-foot-7 sophomore center Ian Dutcher (11 points).

"It was a very good win," Warriors coach Bruce Firchau said. "Our defense was very strong. I'm very pleased. Mike Nicosia came back after being sick and scored 12 points."

Westminster Christian will play Somonauk in a regional semifinal on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Somonauk 69, Elgin Academy 57: The Hilltoppers saw their season come to an end with this loss in a Class 1A Hinckley-Big Rock regional quarterfinal on Tuesday. Jivon McDonald scored 19 points and Drew Stewart added 15 for Elgin Academy (5-19).

Prairie Ridge 49, Huntley 43: Down 33-26 going into the fourth quarter, Huntley (14-11, 4-5) forced overtime with a big fourth quarter but then the Red Raiders ran out of steam and fell to Prairie Ridge in a Fox Valley Conference Fox Division game. Zac Boster led Huntley with 12 points.

Streamwood 63, Ridgewood 56: Marcus Lewis scored 18 points to lead the Sabres (12-12) to this nonconference win at home.
