U-46 high schools to stage plays this weekend

Board meeting
• On Monday, the board of education meets at 7 p.m. in Room 140 at the Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St. in Elgin. The public is welcome to attend and provide citizen comments to the school board at the open meetings. No school Friday
• On Friday, there will be no classes due to Institute Day.
Elgin High
• On Thursday through Saturday, the musical "Guys and Dolls" will be presented at 7 p.m. in the Elgin High School auditorium, 1200 Maroon Drive, Elgin. Tickets can be charged by phone in advance by calling Sally at (847) 888-5100, ext. 5103. Prices are $8 per adult and $6 per student. Senior citizens age 62 and older living within the U-46 boundaries can view performances for free with a platinum card. For details, call (847) 888-5000, ext. 5040.
South Elgin High
• On Thursday through Saturday, the musical "Anything Goes" will be presented at 7 p.m. at South Elgin High School, 760 E. Main St. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Adult tickets are $8; student and senior citizen tickets are $6. Tickets will be on sale in the auditorium lobby one hour before show time. Kenyon Woods
• On Tuesday, a Mardi Gras Dance will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the commons area of Kenyon Woods Middle School, 1515 Raymond St., South Elgin.
Creekside
• On Wednesday, fourth- to sixth-graders and the chorus at Creekside Elementary School in Elgin will present a program at 7 p.m. at Larkin High School, 1475 Larkin Ave., Elgin.
Heritage
• On Monday, fourth- to sixth-graders at Heritage Elementary School in Streamwood will perform "Broadway and More" at 7 p.m. at Streamwood High School, 701 W. Schaumburg Road.
Lowrie
• During this entire week, the student council at Lowrie Elementary School in Elgin is holding a fundraiser for the Community Crisis Center in Elgin. They are asking each student to bring in a dime for each year of their age. They will use the donations to purchase paper products.
• On Thursday, the PTA is hosting its first "Pajama Movie Night" from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gym, 264 Oak St., Elgin. The entrance fee is a canned good for $1 or less. Reservations are required.
Spring Trail
• On Thursday, sixth-graders will present their World's Fair from 8:40 to 10 a.m. in the commons area at Spring Trail Elementary School, 1384 Spring Valley Drive in Carol Stream.
Sunnydale
• On Monday through Wednesday, "Jump Rope for Heart" will take place during P.E. classes at Sunnydale Elementary School, 716 Sunnydale Blvd., Streamwood. This program benefits the American Heart Association and students. It's a national educational fundraising program that engages elementary students in a physical activity (jumping rope) while raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research. Students ask friends and family for donations and receive thank-you gifts based on the dollars they raise.
• On Thursday, Sunnydale Elementary School will host a School/Community Health Fair from 6 to 8 p.m. This fair will provide the opportunity to learn about some community resources that are available. Come with your family and have some fun! Try out the Dance Revolution or the Wii; try some healthy snacks, learn about your community and meet your neighbors.
Washington
• On Monday, the Washington Elementary School Primary (K-3) Spring Sing will be presented at 7 p.m. at Larkin High School auditorium, 1475 Larkin Ave., Elgin.
Wayne
• On Tuesday, a Writer's Fair will be held, along with a Scholastic Book Fair, storytelling, crafts, and enjoying stories from the Young Authors from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wayne Elementary School, 5N443 School St., Wayne.
• On Thursday, a "Mother & Son Golf Outing" will be held at the indoor "Putting Edge" in Hoffman Estates. Couples can sign up for 5:30 or 7:30 p.m. tee times. The evening will consist of mini-golf, pizza, pop and snacks.
In other news
• Tefft Middle School seventh-grader Tim Euchner was invited to attend the Presidential Inauguration program on Jan. 22. Tim is a student leader of the People to People Leadership program, which offers leadership development programs in Washington, D.C. and at top colleges across the United States. Students in fifth to 12th grade came from all over the world to hone their skills, prepare for college, and explore future careers through unique access to extraordinary people, places and insights.
• Big band fans will love the soon-to-be newest addition to the WEPS programming lineup. "The Original Big Band Showcase" with host Denny Farrell is coming to 88.9 FM at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 4. Farrell is a Big Band Hall of Fame Inductee and received a "2001 Award of Excellence" for his program from the National Ballroom and Entertainment Association and is the only worldwide Big Band request program available today. • A U-46 high school juried art exhibit will be held at First Community Bank at 50 Tyler Creek Plaza in Elgin. The exhibit will remain on display through March 10. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays; and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. • On Thursday, all middle school orchestra students will present a concert at 7 p.m. at the Hemmens Auditorium, 45 Symphony Way in Elgin. Not only will the public have the opportunity to hear these young musicians, they will also see Soon Hee Newbold as the guest conductor. Soon Hee plays the violin, piano and viola and has performed as a soloist and in professional orchestras throughout the world. She has played at The Kennedy Center, Aspen Music Festival and School, and in Scotland, England, Korea, and other countries. Her compositions have been performed by orchestras and other performing groups throughout the world. She will conduct the middle-schoolers in their evening concert and work with groups during the day to provide a more hands-on experience for students.
