Emory's 3-pointers lift Marmion over St. Edward

Marmion's Bryce Emory got the run started Friday night and every time St. Edward was ready to make a run, Emory was there to silence the crowd.

Emory hit five 3-pointers, including one to start an 11-0 run midway through the first quarter that propelled the Cadets to a 53-42 Suburban Catholic Conference boys basketball victory in Elgin.

"This is a shooter's gym. It's pretty easy to shoot in this gym," Emory said.

The Green Wave (8-18, 3-11) led 8-6 with 3:20 left in the first quarter. Emory hit a 3-pointer on the Cadets' next possession to give Marmion a 9-8 lead. The Cadets (12-14, 10-4) extended the lead to 17-8 65 seconds into the second quarter on a Tyler Hlavak basket.

Marmion's halftime lead was 26-13. The Green Wave struggled from the field, going 5 for 19. They were just 2 for 13 from behind the 3-point arc.

"We had no layups and I think only two field goals in the paint," Green Wave coach Keith Chuipek said. "It was the topic of our discussion (at halftime)."

St. Edward, not the biggest team so it struggles to score inside on most nights, made a conscious effort to get the ball in the post much more in the second half. The change worked as the Green Wave began to chip away at what was a 17-point deficit. Josh Dix, who returned after missing four games because of a deep leg contusion, had a layup 12 seconds into the fourth quarter to cut the Cadets' lead to 37-30. Emroy then hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key as Marmion retook a double-digit lead, 40-30. Steve Martin again cut the deficit to 7, 42-35, with 4:15 remaining. On the next possession, Emory again hit from long range.

The Green Wave never could get the deficit under seven.

"It's always good to get a win here because it's such a loud enviroment," Emory said.

Emory's 17 points led the Cadets. David Brouch added 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Sean Fitchel and Mark Peters each finished with 10 points.

Dix and Riley Coleman each had 12 points to lead St. Edward. Martin added 10, 9 in the second half.
