Former Wauconda High booster club treasurer charged with theft

The former treasurer of a Wauconda High School booster club was arrested after police learned she stole $3,500 from the group, authorities said Wednesday.

Deborah Hoy, 49, of the 300 block of Larkdale Row, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant and charged with felony theft.

The thefts were uncovered last August after members of the club reported several suspicious financial transactions had been made using the club's checking account, Wauconda police said. An investigation revealed Hoy - then the group's treasurer - had written four checks from the account and deposited them in her personal accounts, police said.

The club is a parent group that raises money to support school activities, such as athletics, music and art. It also offers student scholarships.

Hoy resigned as treasurer shortly after police were notified, authorities said. She later repaid the stolen funds, police said.

Hoy, a secretary for Wauconda Unit District 118's special-education department, was arrested in the district office on the Wauconda High School campus.

Superintendent Daniel Coles expressed sympathy for the booster club and Hoy.

Hoy, who could not be reached for comment, was released from custody after posting $1,000 bond. She is next scheduled to appear in court March 3 in Waukegan.
