Hear music from around the world at MCC event
McHenry County College's Music Department will host Singers of United Lands 2009 featuring a singing quartet from four different countries during two workshop/performances at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, in the MCC Conference Center, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake.
The singers, ages 22 to 25, representing South America, Africa, Europe and Asia, will perform and teach songs from their native culture during the two 55-minute workshop/performances.
The performers include three musicians and one civil engineer who are on a six-month tour throughout the U.S.
According to MCC music instructor Steven Szalaj, this is the second year in a row that he invited SOUL to perform at the college as an educational opportunity for both students and community members.
"This group is enlightening because of the diversity of the performers who share authentic music and culture from each of their countries," Szalaj said.
The singers include Rory Mendez from Santiago, Chile; Corrine Towett from Kenya; Martins Kiscenko of Rezekne, Latvia; and Subi Kim of Seoul, South Korea.
The event is free and open to the public. For information, contact or e-mail Steven Szalaj at ssalaj@mchenry.edu or Thomas Takayama at ttakayam@mchenry.edu or call (815) 479-7670.
