Montini runs by Wave

Montini girls basketball coach Jason Nichols knows the best way to stop St. Edward is to stop Katie Yohn.

The Broncos did just that, holding the Green Wave star to just 3 field goals, and cruised to an 83-47 Suburban Catholic Conference victory in Elgin.

"We wanted to take her out of it and let somebody else beat us," Nichols said. "We made Katie work for everything she got."

Courtney Thomas, Kiki Wilson, Whitney Holloway and Chrissy Fletcher all took turns in the first half defending Yohn. The different looks between speed, size and strength contributed to Yohn only hitting 1 field goal, that coming with less than a minute left in first half, before halftime. The senior had 8 points in the half, going 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

The rest of the Green Wave also struggled. St. Edward (15-8, 7-5) went 4 for 22 from the floor in the first half and trailed 45-22.

"We were off shooting in the first half," Green Wave coach Michelle Dawson said. "We missed some shots that I thought were quality shots. We usually hit some of those."

While the Green Wave struggled, the Broncos (22-4, 12-1) ran away with the game thanks to Holloway and the 3-point shooting of Alison Seberger.

Holloway was able to drive almost anytime she wanted. If she didn't wind up with an easy layup, the sophomore would find an open player. She finished with a game-high 23 points, dished 10 assists and had 6 steals.

"We had a hard time stopping Holloway's penetrating," Dawson said. "She's so quick. She recognizes when you're trying to help on her and aware of where their free person is."

Seberger hit four 3-pointers and went 7 of 10 from the field to finish with 18 points. Tianna Brown added 9 points and 7 rebounds off the bench for Montini, which never trailed after getting out to a 9-0 lead 3 1/2 minutes into the first quarter.

Yohn finished with 14 points, 8 coming from the foul line, and 7 rebounds. Freshman Madeline Kerr added 13 points for the Green Wave.
