Bultman's buzzer-beater lifts Jacobs past CLS
Keri Bultman realized time was running out.
So, with 1 second remaining in the game, the Jacobs senior launched a 5-footer over the outstretched arm of Crystal Lake South center Caitlin Mize.
Bultman's shot hit nothing but net to give the Golden Eagles an exhilarating 49-47 upset win over the Gators in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game in Algonquin Friday night.
"We wanted to run the clock down and get a shot up with about 6 seconds left," said Bultman, who suffered a leg cramp after the shot. "I knew I had to get a shot up. I just shot it over Caitlin and hoped it would go in. This is an amazing win against a very good Crystal Lake South team."
Bultman scored 12 points with 7 rebounds and 3 assists for the Golden Eagles (15-7, 3-
1).
"I was comfortable with any of the five kids on the floor shooting the ball," said Jacobs coach Ed Haugens. "Keri got a good shot and she came through under pressure. She is not only a good basketball player but she is a great competitor and a great kid. This is a big win for us and this win is huge for our confidence."
The Gators (17-4, 3-1), who were hampered by 24 turnovers and 33 percent shooting (18-of-55), grabbed a 47-44 lead with 1:49 left on a putback by Mize.
Those were the last points the Gators would score.
Jacobs senior Sam Vojtsek canned a long 3-pointer with 1:28 left to tie the score at 47.
"Give Jacobs credit. They gave great effort and really scrapped," said South coach Kyle McCaughn. "Jacobs is a quality team and is very well-coached. I am not disappointed with the effort but I am disappointed with the outcome. Sure, the kids made mistakes. But they gave me everything they had for 32 minutes."
Vojtsek and Maria Tamburrino joined Bultman with 12 points each for Jacobs. Mize led South with 17 points and 9 rebounds while Michelle Gaede scored 12.
