No job fair but a help fair in Elgin
In better times, Elgin has had summer job fairs for teens or career fairs for adults.
But as the economy worsens and the recession's effects have spread, it's forcing local aid agencies to step up.
The city and United Way of Elgin have confirmed at least nine groups to gather at the Hemmens Cultural Center for an "agency fair," a clearinghouse of information for those trying to find how they can get help - and from whom.
"It is bittersweet. We'd much rather be having a job fair and matching people up with jobs," said Ken Nicolai, major at the Elgin Salvation Army, one of the agencies participating. "I can remember a few years back people calling us to see if we knew of anybody who could work. I don't get those anymore."
The fair will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, in the lower level of the Hemmens, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin.
Agencies include Community Crisis Center, Centro de Informacion, Alternatives/Workforce Transition Job Department from Elgin Community College, Family Service Association, Well Child Center Pediatric Dental, Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS), and Senior Services Associates of Elgin.
"We hope by offering this Agency Fair, we can help people connect with the appropriate social service agencies," said Lynne Bosley, president of United Way of Elgin.
Nicolai said his group will provide some drinks and snacks if there is a long line at the fair.
"It's a way to educate and a way for people to access services they're not aware of. The (information at the) booth is a few feet away instead of across town," he said. "People are genuinely in need and genuinely seeking help. Some people will be surprised that they can get food stamps, that they can get things to help their family."
