District 203 narrows superintendent search
Naperville Unit District 203 will interview five candidates this weekend to replace retiring Superintendent Alan Leis.
The school board recently met to learn more about the five and discuss the interview process.
"We are very impressed with the candidates ... and look forward to interesting and productive conversations over the course of the weekend," board President Suzyn Price said.
Leis, who has been at the helm since 2003, is retiring at the end of June after 40 years in education.
The new leader will oversee 21 schools and eventually an early childhood center as well, totaling about 18,000 students. The district also is in the midst of $114.9 million in facility projects.
Roughly 40 educators applied for the superintendent position. Search firm Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates is assisting with the hiring process, just as it did when Leis was chosen.
In the fall, the firm met with more than 200 teachers, students, staff and residents to find out what qualities they want to see in a new leader.
On the whole, respondents said they aren't looking for major changes but for someone who can continue the level of excellence Leis has helped foster.
Other qualities that topped the list include someone who communicates well, collaborates effectively, has experience at all levels, has knowledge of finances and can address the district's growing diversity.
The five finalists will be interviewed in closed-door meetings scheduled for Jan. 16 and 17. The board will then choose its top three candidates who will undergo a second round of interviews Jan. 18-20. Another closed session meeting is scheduled for Jan. 21 during which the board could select its finalist.
From there, the board will do any remaining background checks and possibly visit the top candidate's district to speak with colleagues and community members.
Price said the five remaining candidates are from across the nation but would not elaborate on whether any are local. The district plans to announce its selection in February.
