Golden Kiwanis learn about taxes

The Elgin Golden K Kiwanis will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 357 Division St., Elgin. The program will be by Shirley Miller, Elgin Township Assessor, and assistant Steve Surnicki. Their topic will be "Kane County Taxes, Assessments & Exemptions." Visitors are welcome. American Legion needs singers

The Lake in the Hills American Legion Post 1231 is recruiting singers to sing the national anthem at ballgames and other events. They need singers beginning April through August. The games are played during the week and on weekends. When you would sing would depend on the schedule you are assigned to. They would accept people singing solo, duets, trios and quartets. Monthly book sale at Oak Crest

Oak Crest Residence and Atrium Apartments, 204 S. State St., Elgin, invites the community to attend their monthly book sale from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13 and Wednesday, Jan. 14 in the Atrium. The sale consists of a large selection of gently used books (over 1,000 titles), VHS movies and CDs. Hardbacks are $1, paperbacks are 50 cents. A beautifully furnished doll house, which was handcrafted by the members of Oak Crest, will be raffled off beginning this month. Refreshments will be served. Hear about ECC's plans for the future

The Carpentersville-Dundee Area League of Women Voters invites you to attend a presentation by Elgin Community College regarding their 60-year planning program. Hear about ECC's plans for the future at the meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 at the Sleepy Hollow Village Hall, 1 Thorobred Lane. In the first week in March, the league will hold candidates' forums for those seeking elected positions on the boards of the villages of East and West Dundee, Sleepy Hollow, Gilberts and Carpentersville, school districts 300 and 509, Dundee Township Public Library and Dundee Township Park District.
