Mass-to-Schnack attack lifts Fillies in OT

With sophomore Sarah Mass and senior Jenny Schnack doing their best impression of a southpaw quarterback and wide receiver, Barrington's girls basketball team put some key points on the board in overtime against visiting Maine West on Wednesday.

Nursing a 2-point lead in the extra session, Mass delivered a perfect half-court bomb to Schnack, who got behind the defenders and raced to the basket for a layup and 49-45 lead with 1:06 remaining.

That was all the momentum the Fillies needed as they recorded a 51-47 triumph in the Sweet Sixteen tournament game.

Mass (16 points) and Schnack (14) were also the top scorers for the Fillies (12-6) while junior Megan O'Neill tossed home a game-high 25 points for Maine West (9-7) with 11 rebounds and classmate Sam Acosta added 16.

"We try to go long once in while," said Schnack, a 400-meter state qualifier in track and field. "It was a perfect pass by Sarah. It was an exciting bucket and gave us some momentum."

"We haven't tried it much, maybe one time before," said Mass, who also had 5 rebounds and 4 assists. "But there was no one back there and Jenny is so fast."

After Schnack's big basket, O'Neill brought the Warriors within 49-47 when she hit a 6-footer with 23.7 seconds left.

But senior Anna Kirchoff hit a pair of free throws for Barrington with 18.8 seconds left to seal the verdict.

Mass had 8 of her points in the first quarter, including back-to-back 3-pointers.

"That Mass girl really killed us," said Hall of Fame coach Maine West coach Derril Kipp. "She took their team on her back and really got them off to a good start."

"I thought Sarah played a fabulous game," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "We needed her leadership and she provided it. I felt she put our team on her shoulders.

"Kiersten Tinkoff and Brooke Chandor gave us very good games and Sam Maasarani handled the ball well for us in her first varsity start. She set the offensive tempo well."

Chandor grabbed 9 rebounds for the Fillies while Maasarani had 5.

"Lizzie Deuel gave us some good minutes, too," Barreiro said. " This was a very big team win. I thought the kids executed well at the end. Any time you beat Maine West, you're happy. So we feel good."

The Warriors looked good at the start of the second half when a 3-pointer by Acosta, and a pair of buckets by O'Neill tied the game at 22-22. But Barrington answered with a driving layup by Schnack and 17-footer from Mass for a 26-22 lead.

The game was tied 4 times in the final quarter.

"We sort of crumble at the end of games," said Warriors point guard Shaina Yalda (4 assists). "We've got to get better at not doing that. I thought we played a heck of a game but we made a lot of mistakes. Megan (O'Neill) had a great game and Ellen Coogan (6 rebounds) made some nice passes. We all contributed."

"We started out soft in the first half," Kipp added. "We came back in the second half but dug ourselves too big a hole."

Hersey 67, Hinsdale South 34: Megan Rogowski scored 18 of Hersey's 26 points in the first quarter as the Huskies rolled in their first game of the Season's End tourney in the Ken Carter Gymnasium.

Rogowski finished with 20 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. She also had 7 rebounds.

"I don't think I've ever witnessed 18 points by one player in a quarter," said Hersey coach Mary Fendley, who has been coaching for 17 seasons. "I've certainly never seen it by a Hersey girl. I don't know if we've even scored 26 points in a quarter."

Kelly Rogowski (4 assists) added 17 points for the Huskies (12-5) while Annie Perkins had 7.

Julia Fredian, Kari Tunney also had 4 assists while Maddie Swan pulled down 7 rebounds.

Riverside Brookfield 47, St. Viator 44: St. Viator (14-5) was led by Susan Hohenadel (20 points) in its first game of the Season's End tournament against undefeated Riverside-Brookfield at Hersey High School.

Rolling Meadows 43, Willowbrook 39: Mustangs coach Todd Hatfield watched his club (6-11) get off to winning start in the Season's End at Fenton High School as senior Kelly Zahorski scored a game-high 17 points. Teammates Maddy Urban and freshman Ann Marie Lynch each added 7 while junior Kelly Adair pitched in 6.

Wheeling 75, Glenbrook South 43: State-ranked Wheeling (19-0) was led by Janelle Cannon (21 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals), Bianca Szarafarowicz (18 points, 3 rebounds) and Ashley Wilson (16 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocked shots) in the nonconference game held in Glenview.
