Ex-Meadows resident jailed

A former Rolling Meadows resident was sentenced to jail in Boone County, Mo., Monday for child enticement. Matthew S. Michals, 23, received a 120-day jail sentence for attempted sexual misconduct involving a child, a misdemeanor, and was sentenced to five years probation for attempted statutory rape, Boone County Assistant Prosecutor Merilee Crockett said. Michals must also register as a sex offender. He began serving his sentence immediately and will be in jail during the holidays, Crockett said. Authorities said Michals chatted online with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl but who was really an undercover police officer in 2007. Authorities also said Michals exposed himself using a Web camera and arranged a meeting with the girl. Michals is a former University of Central Missouri baseball player. He still attends the college but no longer plays baseball, Crockett said.

Objection hearing on Monday

A hearing has been set for 7 p.m. Monday for Schaumburg Township Highway Commissioner Robert Fecarotta's objection to the candidacy of his challenger, John A. Salmassi of Roselle, in the Feb. 24 Republican primary. Their contest is currently the only reason polls will be open anywhere in the Northwest suburbs on primary day. Monday's hearing will be at Schaumburg Township Hall, 1 Illinois Blvd. in Hoffman Estates. Fecarotta's objection questions the validity of the signatures on Salmassi's candidacy petition, as well as whether Salmassi's eligible for the Republican primary after voting Democratic in the 2007 primary.
