First of many Antioch wins?

With at least 18 games left on its schedule, the Antioch boys basketball team should have no problem exceeding last year's win total. Of one.

Just five games in, the Sequoits got their first win of the season Saturday night by turning back visiting Wauconda 59-46. What bodes even better for the future is that they looked pretty good in doing so.

Seven players scored for the Sequoits and they forced 21 Wauconda turnovers.

The Bulldogs (2-5, 0-3 North Suburban Prairie) were behind the entire game and never cut their deficit to fewer than 7 points in the fourth quarter. At one point, they were down by as many as 18 points.

"I didn't actually think we'd (have only one win) at this point," said second-year Antioch coach Mike Skinner, whose team moves to 1-4 (1-1 North Suburban Prairie) after finishing 1-24 last season. "There have been a lot of games we could have pulled out.

"But it's going to happen. We're going to keep winning. We've got some good guys. We've got shooters and ballhandlers. And we're one of the deepest teams (in the NSC Prairie) besides North Chicago. We play 10 guys. Our drop off (between the starters and the reserves) isn't really a drop-off at all."

Although, Antioch's starters still did most of the scoring.

Starting point guard Cameron White, also known as the Antioch football team's star running back, tallied a game-high 19 points. And if that weren't enough, he racked up a handful assists with nifty passes to his teammates.

"Cameron does a really good job of passing the ball," Skinner said. "He brings a lot of different looks for us."

So does guard Kyle Haley, who hit two 3-pointers for the Sequoits and went 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to salt away the victory.

"I just knew I had to make them," Haley said. "I just knocked them down."

Haley put a stop to any thoughts Wauconda had of stealing a victory.

The Bulldogs had cut a 17-point fourth quarter deficit to 51-44 with a 10-0 run that included a string of points from Bradon Prate, Gibson Gaite and Matt Stonis, who wound up with a team-high 16 points on three 3-pointers.

But Antioch closed with an 8-2 run that included all of Haley's free throws.

"Despite some blunders early on, we continued to fight our way back into the game," Wauconda coach Rich Wolf said. "I give our kids a lot of credit for that.

"We just let the tempo get away from us in the first half. They (the Sequoits) want that up and down game and we can't play that and I think we got caught up at the end of the half, turned the ball over and they built a lead."

Besides Stonis, Gaite and Prate also scored in double-figures for Wauconda. They had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, Alec Paramski added 9 points and Eric Smith finished with 8 points for the Sequoits.
