Vote set on library plans:

The Cook Memorial Public Library board could vote Tuesday to hire a construction contractor to build a new facility in Vernon Hills. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the main library, 413 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville. A $7 million library is planned for Aspen Drive south of Route 60. Additionally, a $7 million expansion is planned for the main library.

Saving and investing program:

University of Illinois Extension's Lake County unit will host a free, 90-minute special program called Saving and Investing in Turbulent Times at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 16. It'll be at the extension office at 100 S. Route 45 in Grayslake. U of I professors via teleconference and extension educators will help answer questions about what's best for your money in light of the topsy-turvey financial markets. In particular, David Sinow, a clinical professor of finance, will address how today's economic situation affects investors. Paul McNamara, a U of I professor of consumer economics, will discuss lessons we can derive from behavioral economics and market history. The event's final 30 minutes will be a question-and-answer session. To register, call the extension at (847) 223-8627. Another event is slated for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 20.

Dancing machines:

The Mundelein Park District's new social dance class debuts from noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Mundelein Community Center. This is an energizing get-fit class for adult beginners. Get in the "swing" and learn to dance with a partner, performing those great steps seen on TV including Two-Step, Cha Cha, Swing and Nite Club. Instruction is led by Steven Hororka, United Country Western Dance Council competitor and Las Vegas Dancesport Dance Studio instructor. Cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple. Kids learning gallery:

The Children's Learning Gallery, an interactive exhibit area and play space, is open at the Lake County Discovery Museum in Wauconda. The space is designed for children 10 and under and their caregivers, and features a variety of hands-on activities designed to encourage exploration and help children develop motor skills, express their creativity and learn about nature. A mural, ambient sounds and themed exhibits immerse gallery visitors in Illinois' native tallgrass prairie. Kids can put on a puppet show, build a wigwam and other activities. The museum is on Route 176, just west of Fairfield Road and east of Wauconda in Lakewood Forest Preserve. Visit www.lakecountydiscoverymuseum.org for hours and prices.
