Deadly Long Grove crash still under investigation

No one has been charged in connection to the car crash that killed two teenagers and injured three siblings Monday night in Long Grove.

Funeral arrangements have been set for the teens killed, while the siblings were released from the hospital.

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said the accident on Cuba Road remains under investigation. Authorities are expected to meet with the Lake County state's attorney's office to review possible charges.

Authorities identified the owner of the 2007 Chevy Cobalt driven by 15-year-old Daniel Vicario as Rhonda DeLeon of Waco, Tex. She recently purchased the car for her 21-year-old daughter, Amy A. Hinojosa, of Palatine.

Police said Hinojosa told them she lent the car to Vicario, who she believed to be 18, so he could run an errand. Authorities say the teen did not have a license was driving fast when the vehicle spun out and slammed into trees.

Killed were Vicario and Lilia C. Bueno, 14, who was ejected from the back seat. Corina, as she was known at Winston Campus Junior High in Palatine, had moved to Streamwood just a few weeks earlier.

Three siblings from Palatine who were injured in the crash - Martin Solis, 15, Luis Solis, 13, and Yareli Mendoza-Solis, 8 - were released early Wednesday from Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Bueno's visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Highway, Palatine. A funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. at Mission San Juan Diego, 2323 N. Wilke Road, Arlington Heights. Internment will follow at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.

Visitation for Vicario is from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at River Woods Funeral Chapels, 205 S. River Road, Des Plaines. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Monday at Mission San Juan Diego.

Faculty and staff at Palatine High School, where Vicario and Martin Solis were freshmen, are selling ribbons to help pay for funeral expenses. The school's Pirates flag has been lowered to half-staff.

Long Grove officials held a moment of silence for the victims during a board meeting Tuesday night. Village President Maria Rodriguez said the board has looked into Cuba Road's safety in the past. The narrow, hilly stretch of road is a popular spot for hill-topping, or when a car goes airborne when traveling over hills at excessive speeds.

In 2004, a car going 90 mph in a 30 mph speed zone crashed and killed passenger Brett Karlin, 18, of Buffalo Grove.
