Fremd rebounds impressively
Fremd's girls basketball team wasted no time rebounding from a season-opening loss.
The Vikings (1-1) took a 13-point first-quarter lead and cruised to a 50-29 nonconference victory over McHenry on Wednesday night.
Junior Taylor Glassman scored 14 points and hit two 3-pointers and senior Katie Hetzner scored 11 points for the Vikings. Gianna Abruzzo had 6 points and 7 rebounds and freshman Jessie Wiedemann added 5 rebounds.
Highland Park 51, Meadows 48: Meadows (0-2) saw a big rally fall just short for the second straight night in the Mundelein tournament.
Meadows rallied from a 26-16 halftime deficit as Kelly Zahorski scored 13 points and Maddy Conlin added 9 points with two 3s. Highland Park was 15-for-19 on free throws to Meadows' 10-for-21.
Lake Zurich 48, Prospect 33: Senior Alyssa Glennon scored 10 points and sophomore Sarah Winans added 8 points for Prospect (1-1) in the nonconference road less.
Wisconsin-Green Bay recruit Lydia Bauer scored 19 points and Bradley-bound Olivia Allen added 10 points as the Bears won their season opener.
Jacobs 61, St. Viator 50: St. Viator went from a 28-28 halftime tie to a 52-34 deficit after three quarters as it lost its season opener in the Dundee-Crown tournament.
Seniors Kelly Hendricks and Colleen Nolan scored 11 points apiece and junior Susan Hohenadel added 9 points for the Lions.
Mundelein 69, Prairie Ridge 55: At Mundelein, J.J. Sawchuk scored 16 points and Toni Knar added 15, as the host Mustangs improved to 2-0 in their own Thanksgiving tournament.
Mundelein (2-0 overall) jumped out to a 19-8 lead after one quarter and extended its cushion to 44-16 by halftime.
Kelsey O'Connor chipped in 10 points.
Prairie Ridge (2-1, 2-1) received 11 points apiece from Jackie Schwartz and Shannon Hennelly.
Mundelein takes on Vernon Hills at 7:30 p.m. today.
Glenbrook North 64, Vernon Hills 59 (OT): At Mundelein, the Spartans outscored the Cougars 11-6 in overtime.
Natalie Jones netted 19 points to lead Glenbrook North (1-2 overall, 1-2 tourney), while Erin Buckley added 13.
Vernon Hills (0-2, 0-2) received a career-best 20 points from Mallory Feece. Kirsten Groody and Jessica Feece added 8 each.
