Briefs: Wheaton's State of the City

The Wheaton League of Women Voters will hold its fourth annual State of the City at 7 p.m. today, Nov. 20, at the Wheaton Park District Community Center, 1777 S. Blanchard Road. Residents can mingle with elected officials from 7 to 7:30 p.m. when presentations will begin by Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk, Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200 board President Andrew Johnson and Wheaton Park District President Phillip Luetkehans.

Martial arts helps hungry

Kim's Black Belt Academy will present safety seminars at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the academy, 33W624 Roosevelt Road, West Chicago. A youth seminar for ages 5 and older will run from 3 to 4 p.m. and will provide simple hands-on techniques aimed at building confidence and developing coordination. The adult seminar will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and will address both home safety and personal safety. The seminars are free, but participants should bring three canned food items per person for admission to benefit the Northern Illinois Food Bank in St. Charles. The food bank urgently needs canned fruits, vegetables and meals with protein; no items in glass containers. Drop-off donations are welcome. Hadley improvements meeting

Glen Ellyn School District 41 officials are sponsoring a public meeting to explain recommendations for improvements at Hadley Junior High School. If approved, the plans would be implemented next year. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 in the school's auditorium, 240 Hawthorne Blvd., Glen Ellyn. The school has been involved in an improvement effort called Hadley New Horizons for the past two years and many staff members and parents have developed recommendations to improve the curriculum, schedule and other educational aspects. The Dec. 2 meeting will be the third and last before the recommendations go to the board in January. For details, visit www.d41.org.

Arrowhead Park takes third:

Naperville's Arrowhead Park took third place in the Staples Dream Park Challenge with the Bears. Naperville Park District will receive $5,000 for park improvements. The funds will be used for renovation of the playground and ball field at the park at 711 Iroquois Ave. It was one of 15 parks in the Chicago area competing for a $25,000 makeover.
