Crews clean up chemical spill at Streamwood High

A chemical leak from a truck making a delivery to Streamwood High School has been contained, fire officials say.

It happened around 10:15 a.m. today in a school parking area that was mostly empty, since classes aren't in session because of Veterans Day, Elgin Area School District U-46 spokesman Tony Sanders said.

No injuries or damage to the school have been reported, and the leak does not pose an immediate danger to nearby residents, as hazmat crews have secured the area including preventing the leak from reaching the stormwater system, Streamwood Deputy Fire Chief Mark Hudson said.

A fire truck will remain at the parking lot at 701 W. Schaumburg Road for a few more hours this afternoon.

"At this point we're waiting for a mitigation contractor to arrive," Hudson said early this afternoon.

The truck has two containers, one with 600 gallons of swimming pool chlorine and another with 150 gallons of hypochlorous acid, Hudson said. It's unclear which container was leaking, he added. It's also unclear specifically why the chemicals were being delivered.

Symptoms of chlorine exposure include coughing, chest tightness, watery eyes, burning pain in skin and shortness of breath.

Despite no classes, an unknown number of students and staff were present because of extracurricular activities. Everyone was evacuated as a precaution, Hudson said.
