Crystal Lake South dumps Woodstock

While rain and thunder made Friday night's matchup between Crystal Lake South and Woodstock a Saturday matinee, Kameron Scott was making some thunder of his own.

Scott exploded out of the gate on the second play from scrimmage, busting a 72-yard touchdown run, putting South ahead 6-0 quickly. Scott, who finished with 144 yards rushing and 25 yards receiving, led a backfield that amassed 266 yards rushing and 365 yards of total offense, notching a 25-17 Gator win over Woodstock in the teams' Fox Valley Conference Valley Division finale at Ken Bruhn Field.

While Scott registered another large run, a 41-yarder down the left side on his second run of the game, fullback Derek Mortensen's (42 yards) 1-yard run 7 plays later gave South (7-2, 4-1) a 12-0 lead. Colin Masterson (53 yards) added a 3-yard run in the second quarter, and Drew Ormseth connected with Alec Giles (43 yards) on a 20-yard touchdown pass before the half. While the Gators ran effeciently, they passed just as well.

"Drew keeps getting better every week. He's making good decisions with the receivers and the line is doing a good job when we do have to throw the ball," Gators coach Jim Stuglis said of his quarterback, who was 6 of 12 for 124 yards passing.

Though South scored 25 points prior to intermision, its defense held and rattled Woodstock quarterback Derek Brown throughout the game. Brown completed 5 of 17 passes for 108 yards and threw an interception to South's Alex Macaulay on the Gator 27, ending a promising drive in the first half. The Gators' defense held the Blue Streaks (6-3, 3-2) to 96 total yards in the first half, but allowed 240 yards for the game.

"The first half was probably our best best half of football we played all year in terms of a team concept. We just need to continue that for four quarters," Stuglis said.
