Cary-Grove ends Dundee-Crown's playoff hopes

Cary-Grove's Chad McCarron dropped a possible interception on the first play from scrimmage Friday night.

He was not going to miss the second one.

McCarron intercepted a Lagan Kissack pass on Dundee-Crown's second possession and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown to start the Trojans on their way to a 33-6 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division victory over the Chargers in Carpentersville.

"I've dropped a couple of interceptions this year so every chance I get I need to make a big play," McCarron said.

The Trojans (8-0, 4-0) used McCarron's interception and a missed to field goal to grab the momentum.

Cary-Grove, which won its 32nd straight conference game, drove 82 yards on 7 plays, including a 50-yard run by quarterback Tyler Krebs, to take a 14-0 lead with 12.6 seconds remaining. Eric Chandler capped the drive with a 6-yard score.

After D-C (3-5, 0-4) was forced to punt, the Trojans gained more than 100 yards of offense on a scoring drive. C-G began the drive on its 12-yard line, but during the drive three penalties for 24 yards kept moving the Trojans backward. A holding penalty negated a 70-yard touchdown reception from Krebs to McCarron. The penalties only slowed C-G's march to the end zone. Chandler eventually scored his second touchdown on a 3-yard run.

"I was really proud of our kids for that (drive)," C-G coach Bruce Kay said. "They kept popping back up. They didn't allow the penalties to impact their attitude and effort toward the game."

A safety gave the Trojans a 23-0 halftime lead and a 39-yard field goal from Marcus Kerrigan with 2:26 left in the third quarter increased the lead to 26-0.

"The defense played as well as it has in the last three weeks," Chargers coach Mike Davis said. "We didn't give up big plays as we had in the past."

D-C's Ian Salvatini fielded the ensuing kickoff and handed the ball off to Mike Moncivaiz, who broke a couple of tackles and streaked down the right sideline for an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The extra-point attempt was blocked.

Krebs, who finished with 117 yards rushing, capped the scoring with a 13-yard run with 10:38 remaining.

Chandler finished with 161 yards rushing on 25 carries. The Trojans ran for 388 yards.

The loss was the fourth straight and ending any hopes of a postseason trip for the Chargers. Kissack was 13 of 31 passing for 108, but D-C rushed for only 30 yards on 15 attempts.
