Mud, muck can't slow streaking Geneva

A bad day to wear white turned out to be a good day for the Geneva boys soccer team.

While battling the non-stop flow of rain, the Vikings, in their white home jerseys, beat Western Sun Conference opponent Glenbard South, 7-0, in muddy and messy field conditions in Geneva Tuesday.

"There's a fine line between going all out in weather like this and also making sure you play good soccer," Geneva coach Ryan Estabrook said. "I'm sure it was tough out there to figure out the field and also to play safe. It was good to have this experience because we might see something like this later in the playoffs as well."

The Vikings (14-2-1, 5-0) set the tone early in the game after Kendal Spurgin scored twice in the first 10 minutes.

"That definitely got everyone going," Spurgin said. "It sparked everyone's confidence."

"Kendal Spurgin is normally not a goal scorer, but he had two very nice goals for us," Estabrook added. "When you can get that off a guy who is not known for scoring, that's a great start to a game."

"It's hard to adjust when the guys don't come out as hard as they need to against, I think, one of the better teams in the area, maybe even one of the best teams in the area," Glenbard South coach Bob Blecher added.

Michael McCabe netted Geneva's third goal with 19:11 left in the first half. Less than three minutes later, the Vikings struck again, thanks to John McSpadden's goal off a missed opportunity by a teammate. The half ended when Peter Wensel scored on an assist from Brady Wahl to give Geneva a 5-0 advantage.

With 23:05 remaining in the game, Robbie Johnson scored the sixth goal for the Vikings. Scoring was capped when Sam Peniak scored on an assist from Jacob Carmany with 13:30 left.

Once again, the Vikings receive an all-around effort with 6 different players scoring 7 goals.

"We are playing really well and getting it done when we need to," Spurgin said.

"It's nice when you can score 7 goals and (leading scorer Shawn Sloan) doesn't have to score any of them," Estabrook added. "It's nice for other guys to be able to finish the play."

This was the third time Glenbard South (6-8-1, 2-3) was shut out this year.

"We are sort of adjusting to some personnel changes," Blecher said.

"Three players we have who play in the back, none of them started the season in the back, so it's a little bit of an education for some of them. We are still pretty young, so this is kind of a learning experience against a quality team."
