Surfing the turf

Just in time for its homecoming celebration this week, Palatine's Fremd High School unveiled its outdoor stadium's new synthetic turf Tuesday.

The marching band and physical education classes were the first to get to try out the new field. The school also held a special dedication ceremony featuring representatives from all the student groups that will use the field.

Fremd is the first of the five Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 schools to receive a new artificial turf playing surface.

District 211 officials say the stadium renovations, which are happening at all five schools in the district, cost about $8.7 million. That includes new drainage system and a track around each field.

The first football game on Fremd's new field is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 3, when the Vikings take on district rival Conant High School at 7:30 p.m.
