Two teens charged in Waubonsie Valley fight

Two teens from Aurora have been charged in connection with a Thursday afternoon altercation at Waubonsie Valley High School in which authorities say one threatened a teacher and the other fought with police.

William A. Jackson, 17, of the 1200 block of Andover Circle, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, disarming a police officer and criminal damage to state supported property about 1:45 p.m. Thursday after an incident at the Aurora high school.

Just a half-hour earlier, a 15-year-old male was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for threatening a teacher, authorities said.

Police said Jackson, angry about the younger teen's arrest, began arguing with the school resource officer and attempted to free the youth from the transportation van destined for the police department so the teen could be processed.

When the officer went to arrest Jackson, police said a fight ensued, during which Jackson tried repeatedly to grab the officer's gun, eventually unlatching the safety on the officer's holster. As the two were fighting, they fell against the van, causing about $500 damage before the officer driving the vehicle was able to gain control of Jackson, who had to be pepper sprayed.

Jackson and one of the officers were treated at the scene for effects from pepper spray. The school resource officer was treated for scratches and cuts by the school nurse.

Waubonsie Valley Principal Kristine Marchiando denied any such event occurred when asked Thursday. On Friday, after police confirmed the incident, Marchiando declined to comment.
